Abstract
HORNOK, Judith: „Modern Arab Women. The New Generation of the United Arab Emirates“, Vienna Graz Klagenfurt 2011
That the Arab women are strong and partly more strongly than the men I in my year in Oman already learned. Here it documented. A very good and also important book, that with the prejudices that the Arab men the woman suppressed and it is disadvantaged with the clothes up. Dynamic, successful women speak openly about their successes and their life attitudes and - experiences. In interview form this is very good and made structured. The portrait photo of the women is unique and shows the charisma of these persons.
A woman speaks about friendship: „A friend is a part of you, people know through your friends who you are connected with on different levels. Whether it`s intellectual or emotional. I always say: with family, you have no choice, but you get to choose your friends. Truly, this is how it is in life. Friends are the only ones you choose on your own. So how do you choose them? Sometimes people take friends for granted, but I believe that you have to work very hard on friendship. People will tell you automatically that a couple has to work very hard on their relationship. And sometimes, when they are in situations that are maybe critical, they have to figure out how to resolve them, and with friends it is exactly the same. To have friends is a full time job and sometimes might also be stressful. It really takes energy to accomplish that, to actually have a friend. So what is a friend? In the terms of a psychologist, a friend is an extension of you, almost a mirror of you. It is a person, you rely on. And if someone ask me: Are you rich? I will answer ‘I am the richest person on earth.’ My riches are my friends. When you count your friends and you have three or four, you are rich. It´s not money, it´s true friends.” (Page 18)
To the face mask - which is often denounced by western people - one of the women said: „I wore the Niqab, because I found it very comfortable for me. It protects my privacy… “(page 27) another woman said: „… we are not forced, it is our own decision to wear the hijab. To us women is it the dress of the Muslims and you have to understand that we take our religion everywhere, not only to the mosque and at home. It´s our way of life.“(Page 75)
One does not count its age any longer: „‚Time is man-created, age isn´t relevant. And counting years gives us a lot of stress, as it tags us with an expiry date. Life is already stressful enough, why to add to it with an age limit?” (page 58/59)
Women are generally more sensitive opposite other humans: „I need to make sure that my work, my performance, my interactions with others – whether it´s with my staff, colleagues, diplomats or journalists – it needs to have a particular, almost unified ethical standard – an appreciation, a respect.” (page 98)
These women are also open opposite other one: „Travelling and meeting people from different cultures is very inspirational.“(Page 113)
All in all: a mad book, which I recommend to all my friends and acquaintance, so that they apply more understandings for the Arab world today.
